“dROYd” My new little buddy!

Hello Everybody, today I have something to show you I never in a million parsecs ever thought you would see! As regular viewers know I have been having issues with Microsoft Windows 10 and it’s update scheme causing my laptop to crash several times and needing to be re-installed. Well after each crash my laptop refused to boot up and I couldn’t recover my files so when I re-installed Windows it wiped the laptop, Blender models and all….TWICE!…or so I thought!

However, having installed Win 10 for the third time I thought I better check how much of my hard drive had been used and delete any of the old system files that MS don’t delete in the process of loading the software again. They store these “waste” files in a folder named “windows.old” but when I checked my system folder there were THREE folders, “windows.old”…and two others “windows.000” and “windows.001”. Intrigued, I opened these folders and had the shock and surprise of my life….ALL and I mean all of my “lost” files were there in my system folder! All the 3D model files, all the texture and graphic files, all the reference images and all my renders! I was flabberghasted. But this means I have all my work and I have immediately uploaded EVERYTHING up to Bespin Cloud City to store my files there. With luck I won’t lose any more work as I will upload all new files straight away now. (I found a total of 5GB of lost data – yes that much!)

So now I have the pleasure of introducing you to a new little buddy of mine who was inspired by the droid seen in the recent Jedi Fallen Order computer game named BD-1. My buddy is named dROYd or ROY to his friends and has been excited to meet you but he is a little shy too…so here are a few in studio and wireframe pictures to start with….

As you can see, ROY is a little shy but from the wireframe images you can see he is a small bipedal droid but don’t let that fool you, he is very high tech! He can patch in to computer systems, open and close blast doors, project holographic images such as maps and schematics, he even tight-rope walks along cables to gain access to remote platforms etc and activate bridges. He has twin antennae so he can pick up First Order/Imperial transmissions, a multi-wavelength optic sensor eye (he can see “hidden” laser grid security beams and stuff) and even has card slots so he can store info from datacards! He is very versatile. Ok ROY, do you want to come out and let everyone see you properly…they’re my friends….yeah? Come on it’s time for your Glamour Shots!…

This is ROY! See he’s ok if he meets friends of mine. He has a rather nice white colour scheme with red trim, but if the need arises I can customise him and give him a makeover into any pattern I like! You can see on his front and rear body panels  controls for his many high tech functions. You can even see his Input/Output sockets and card slot. Now ROY is a little insecure about his legs but it is his legs that make him so nimble and agile. He also says he can sense an “Evil Roy” that works for the bad guys. I don’t know if there is a “Bad Robot” but here are a few pics so you can compare how close I got to BD-1 from Jedi Fallen Order…

I think BD-1 and ROY look like droid brothers! And there WAS a bad robot version too. Luckily the bad robot isn’t as advanced, it lacks the flexibility and control panel ROY has so he shouldn’t worry. ROY you are a much better dROYd!

I think this just about covers today’s very special introduction. I hope you enjoyed meeting ROY I never thought you’d have the chance to be honest. But as I have recovered my files I have enough new models and stuff for about two months of posts now. There is too much to list here but I hope you’ll call back to see what else I have saved in future posts. Thanks for all your support whilst I struggled with Windows, you are all appreciated whether a new or regular viewer. Till next T.I.E……

For Tyeth’s First Sci-Fi Fest!

Hello Everybody, I have a bit of a bonus post for you all today! After my recent success learning Blender 3D I felt I deserved to treat myself to a day out. Well as it happens there was a Science Fiction Festival over the weekend so I went and had a look! It was another fantastic experience and I had my first moment of media recognition! More on that later… Upon arriving I discovered there was a big lean towards Dr Who and the Time Lord’s franchise as I was greeted by these guys…

These were fully operational Daleks and travelled around the convention floor chasing a very distressed Doctor who was also a very lifelike John Pertwee look-a-like! I couldn’t get a photo of the Doctor as he was too busy rushing here, there and everywhere…plus he was the compere of the on stage events! It’s a good job he has plenty of time.

There were of course some Star Wars stuff as well including the Droids I met earlier in the year at the Comic Con I attended. They were glad to see me

And an interesting bit of information about the last little droid pictured above, his name is R3-N3 and is very heroic. You see this is one of the droids that attempted to repair Queen Amidala’s starship in The Phantom Menace film. Sadly he was hit by enemy fire and blasted into space. The droid you see is a replica built by the gentleman who built the R5-PHT you saw in my post about the earlier Comic Con (and of course featured in it’s own saber design post found HERE ). And in a funny twist of fate, I had pictures of the saber on my phone and I showed the gentleman the hilt. He replied, “Yeah I’ve already seen it”. I was a little confused by the comment and said “How? This is a design I created and posted on my site” to which I got the answer, “I looked up on the Internet to see what people were saying about my droid and this picture showed up in my search results…I then went and saw it on his page!” I couldn’t believe it, I was being recognised (sort of) for my designs by the gentleman whose work I had been inspired by!

EDIT: NEWS FLASH! I have been contacted by Mr G Turner, owner and builder of both R5-PHT and the new little green and white droid. I have mistakenly identified the droid and it’s name is J3-S5 or JESS! I apologise for my mistake, I tried to find the name of his new droid based on model type and colour and I got it wrong 😦  Thank you Mr Turner for letting me know!

But it wasn’t just droids who were present, there were more Sith at the event. At the last con I bumped into Darth Maul….this time it was KYLO REN!…

Yes I had to confront Kylo Ren this time, and his saber has three blades! But no problem for a Jedi Master like myself as you can see from the second image…I had the upper hand saber! Kylo was great actually and I got to examine his saber and found it was really good. Though it would look better in green obviously 😀 . After defeating Darth Maul and Kylo Ren word has been spreading of my exploits and a certain Dark Lord even tried getting me to join his band…DSC_0586 MKDon’t worry, I haven’t turned to the Dark Side of the Force but I have been known to drink Coca-Cola now and then! I forgot I had the bottle in my coat pocket (doh!). However the recruitment attempts didn’t stop there, the Mandalorians wanted to hire my services. Maybe they want me to appear in the new Star Wars television series “The Madalorian” that is due out soon, hmm…whatever the reason Boba Fett was at the con too…

I was beginning to feel outnumbered at these conventions, I think I might be the only Jedi there (in disguise as I don’t have a costume yet 😦  but I’m working on one) Luckily I found some support in the shape of Jedi Master Plo Koon and guess what? He likes green too!…DSC_0581 MK

We easily saw off the Empire and the First Order! But to finish the day, how about some fluffies? Well there was a new face and one you might recall from last time…

As I say in the caption, I’m not sure what the first furry is (never seen it on any planet I’ve been to) so if any of you are fans of Anime and can name it please let me know. The last picture is a slightly better image of the Hoth Wampa I met before. The lighting is much better but it seems Luke Skywalker left in a hurry…I don’t know why the Wampa is armless really!

Sadly it is time for me to leave too, I hope you have had a bit of the fun I had at the con. I want to thank all the folks there for being so accommodating and posing for pictures. They do a great job raising funds for local charities and if you ever get to a convention don’t forget to thank the participants too.

I also need to thank you all, my viewers for dropping by and checking out my little bonus post. Whether you are a regular visitor or this is your first trip to FTSabersite thank you for your support. Till next time…

R5-D4 Saber – A saber for Red

Hello Everybody, today I continue the Star Wars designs with the first of my updated Droid designs! I designed a couple of hilts and applied new colour schemes to them a while ago (including Chopper and K2-SO) but I felt that they weren’t quite right. I was limited by having to rely on the parts available in the virtual saber builder software I used to use. However now I have the power of Blender (and it feels like real power – I’m having to be careful not to turn into a Sith!) I can create bespoke pieces of my own. So, as you can tell from the title this is for the unfortunate Astromech we saw in Star Wars A New Hope, R5-D4 or as Luke called him, “Red”. Again I wanted to push my boundaries and skills and this is the first of three droid hilts. So “Come on Red”….the audience wants to see you….

These work in progress pictures show that R5-D4 is basically a tube to begin with but after some pushing, pulling and reshaping the outline of a basic Astromech appears. Astromechs have many panels and compartments and I tried to add a few of them as slightly recessed areas, which provide convenient gripping characteristics! I also made the blue and silver grill as a separate part then combined it with the body. This ensures that I can model the part and if I make a mistake it doesn’t ruin the work I have done on the hilt already. The same applies to the silver grills situated below. I then had to add the “optic sensors” which are 4 metallic parts that form R5’s face as it were. I noticed that R5’s “neck” section wasn’t quite right so I modelled the row of square windows that circle between his head and body. Ok we’re part way through the build so I will add a few more pics here…

R5-D4 Saber was starting to look the part, however, the longer you tinker with a design, the more things you “find” that you want to alter or fix. Well I realised I had forgotten to provide a way to activate or switch the saber off! I fixed this by modelling the two red arm-like appendages that run horizontally across his body. In real life saber building there are special types of switches called “Tactiles” which can measure as small as 5mm square and just a few mm tall. I imagined using one of these switches attached underneath the red arms to form the On/Off switch. Then it was a matter of tweaking parts and repositioning to get the hilt in proportion(ish!)

Well that is just about all there is to tell about shaping the saber, and most of you will be able to tell that the blade comes out the top of R5’s head – a bit like his bad motivator that shot out of his dome when Luke’s uncle bought him from the Jawa’s. Now some believe that R5 was “Force Sensitive” and knew that Luke had to meet Artoo Detoo to save the galaxy and so purposely malfunctioned. Others believe that Artoo sabotaged R5 while in the Jawa sandcrawler so he could complete his mission. Either way this saber blows it top every time it is ignited! And here are two final images for you…

And there you have it, R5-D4 Saber all lit up and motivated! You may have noticed that R5 tried hopping into an escape pod in the last picture…yes, I have learnt how to add background images to my finished models now (by the way that’s the Tantive V!) just for a bit of fun.

I am out of time for this offering and I hope you liked it. I have a further two droids to bring to you, one you will recognise instantly and a second much newer addition to the Star Wars saga. On top of those, I have two hilts based off films due for release in December, a tribute to the highest grossing super hero film ever, the TLJ tribute and finally….my latest build a cyborg! (cough, cough…hint, hint!) Hopefully you will continue to come back and see what these hilts are in my future posts but for now thank you so much for visiting today (and if you are a regular viewer thanks for your continued support) it is much appreciated. Till next time….
