Forearmed – A Saberstaff for Pong Krell

Hello Everybody, and a big hello and thank you to ALL of the Sentinel Squad UK cosplay troop who came and checked out my design for them. You Guys and Gals are truly amazing and I think you may have broken the hit counter on my stats page! I was honoured by the post displayed in the Squad’s “Briefing Room” on their Facebook page and want to thank their founder for doing that. I again ask you, my viewers and followers, that if you haven’t already please go and check this group out at their Facebook and Twitter pages…I have placed links in the sidebar on the right to take you there!

And today’s business involves a Saberstaff for a Besalisk Jedi General. This character was for a while a revered Jedi warrior and master tactician but after he foresaw the demise of the Jedi Order and the Republic, he decided to better his chances of surviving and turned allegiance. He began to sabotage the campaigns against the Empire and sent troops on suicide no-win missions, while he became more immersed in the Darkside. This character is Pong Krell from the Clone Wars era. He was a reptilian humanoid who had FOUR arms! And during battle he wielded two lightsaber staffs. This is my interpretation of a weapon General Krell may have considered using….this is called Forearmed….

I wanted a tough durable design for this staff and I think it works well. The emitters have protrusions (nicknamed Bunny Ears in real life) which I thought looked like the horns on Krell’s forehead. The emitters screw into a pair of Couplers which have Grenade Grip style ridges, which give the staff a non-slip grip..useful if you have large hands. The mid grip or shaft has twin activation buttons, so should the staff be damaged as Darth Maul’s was in The Phantom Menace, then it can still function as two separate hilts (which would mean four sabers, if Krell had two staffs!). The blades are a reptilian Lime Green colour, neither Jedi or Sith but shows Krell’s journey to the Darkside has begun.

Fortunately Pong Krell’s deception and plans were discovered by the famous 501st Legion of troopers and he was defeated when, whilst trying to slay a group of soldiers who confronted him, was shot and stunned by a Clone Trooper called Tup. Krell was later executed for his crimes…which kind of makes my design defunct, oh well someone else may like one of these staffs!

EDIT: I would like to thank Experience Film for reminding me I had forgotten to mention Besalisks hail from the planet Ojom, and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s friend in the diner called Dexter Jettster, is of the same species as Pong Krell!

I am running short of time and will have to end soon, but I have a few quick notes on what’s coming soon. I do have a “Darkside” version of this weapon for an upcoming post and a new weapon for a “War Orphan”, along with an update of my first attempt at 3d modelling! So I hope you will all return to see these posts, I appreciate each and every one of you for supporting me and this site. Till next time.

Mon Calamarian Lightsaber – A Sub-Aquatic Saber

Hello Everybody, today I have a saber I am pleased with, so we will need to check our Jedi Respirators and your SCUBA diving gear as we visit Mon Cala! This saber I designed a long time back but only just rediscovered it and I envisaged that it belonged to Gial Ackbar. Gial Ackbar was born (hatched?) and raised on the aquatic world of Mon Cala where he became the Captain of the Mon Calamari Guard and chief military advisor to the King, Yos Kolina. However this was during the time of the Clone Wars and nothing stayed peaceful for long, even under water. Sadly King Kolina was assassinated by Separatist Riff Tamson, but the credit for the crime was taken by another faction so as to start a civil war on the planet. As a result a new King couldn’t be crowned which Darth Sidious sensed as an opportunity to take advantage. He sent Count Dooku and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS) to muddy the waters. This prompted the Republic and the Jedi Council to send Senator Amidala and Anakin Skywalker to assist Mon Cala. Anakin had a saber so I thought Gial Ackbar would benefit from owning one so here is my design for him, this is Mon Calamarian…

I attempted to capture the look of the creature that probably inspired the look and design of Gial Ackbar, the Squid! The emitter has a oceanic cyan coloured blade and is reminiscent of the pointed bulbous head of the squid and Ackbar himself. The switch and body have scale like accents and blocks to represent the coarse skin of the calamari. The pommel is once again one of my FTE Emitter Pommels, and looks perfect as the tentacles that help propel the squid through the water and catches it’s prey.

As you can see from the picture above Gial Ackbar is of course Admiral Ackbar famous for leading the Rebel Alliance against the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi, oh and his famous line “IT’S A TRAP!”. With help from Anakin and another Jedi, Kit Fisto, Gial Ackbar was able to win the battle for his home world. A new King was crowned and new allegiances pledged. Ackbar went on to command in the Rebel Alliance and much later was enlisted by General Leia to help the Resistance in their fight against the First Order and Starkiller Base.

So that was Mon Calamarian and we have learned a few facts, firstly, Admiral Gial Ackbar was a formidable military tactician for many years and secondly, Lightsabers can be made to work UNDERWATER! (You can see Anakin’s saber used underwater in the Clone Wars cartoon telling the above story of the battle for Mon Cala, so it is canon!) I hope you liked this offering and will return to see more new designs in upcoming posts. Thank you for looking in today and supporting FTSabersite! Till next time.

Balance Point Lightsaber- A Saber for Snips

Hello Everyone, I have returned from seeing Rogue One for the second time (but this time I saw it in 3D! More on this later). In the promotional trailers that were released for the film a certain spaceship seemed to have been included in one of the scenes. The inclusion (or not) of this ship caused a stir as some fans thought it may indicate an appearance of a character or mention of the events from Star Wars Rebels. The ship was The Ghost and the hoped for character was Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka operated as a spy after leaving the Jedi Order and eventually met up and began mentoring the crew of The Ghost. With all the excitement revolving round Ahsoka and the fact that she may be in Rogue One, I decided to attempt replicating one of her sabers in the builder. This is the fruits of my labour, I call this saber Balance Point…

This is as close as I can get to recreating Snips’ saber. It shares the double lipped shrouded emitter, with the grooves down the sides. The body is made of Couplers to get the correct length. The switches are smooth and recessed to allow Ahsoka to use the hilt in the reverse grip she is so famous for. To finish the look the saber has the round pommel with the ring of blocks around it’s circumference. The weapon is finished in plain silver with the equally famous lime green blade.

Some people may be wondering, “Why the name Balance Point?” Well Ahsoka Tano’s codename whilst she was spying was Fulcrum and in mechanical terminology a Fulcrum “is the point against which a lever is placed to get purchase, or on which it turns or is supported”. The second definition reads “a thing that plays a central or essential role in an activity, event, or situation”. Ahsoka’s exploits could easily be described as such!

I hope you liked this design and will return to see more from myself and my friends in future posts. Thanks for looking in today. Wait.. I nearly forgot Rouge One 3D, the film was even better. The effects were used brilliantly and helped draw you further into the story emotionally. I am not the richest lightsaber designer in the world but even I would recommend you see both the 2D and 3D versions for the full experience, there is so much packed into the film. That brings me to the end of today’s post..Till next time.
