Farewell Mr Mayhew MTFBWY

It is with an extremely heavy heart that I discovered Mr Peter Mayhew has passed away. As you may have seen I had been teasing a new design for a “Wookie Warrior”, well as you will have worked out it was a design inspired by Chewbacca who Mr Mayhew portrayed from 1977 all the way to 2015.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the immediate family and close friends of Mr Mayhew and I wish I could have thanked him for all he gave me  as a fan. I will post my full gallery next week, for now I raise Wookie Berserker in his honour.

Sorry everybody, disaster has struck! (But at least I’m still here)

Hello Everyone….

I am not in my usual jovial mood today as I have a bit of bad news. Luckily I am still here but one of the sabers I have been teasing you with and was hoping to post this weekend has been lost.

Let me explain….as some of you know I have a really old laptop and I have been struggling to keep it running. Well I had been saving all my designs onto USB stick drives because the laptop kept reporting it had no memory left. I fixed this problem by doing a full system and drive clean up but I still had my designs stored on USB. I was busy this afternoon creating the title header image for my Thor inspired crossguard hilt and had the folder open which I had it stored in. As I attempted to save this image to the USB stick I got a message saying “Write Protect is active cannot save”. I tried several times but it wouldn’t save so I removed the drive and re-inserted it. The laptop immediately reported an issue on the drive and asked did I want to scan and fix it. Before I had a chance Windows proceeded to do the disc scan and “fixed” the problem. ONLY PROBLEM WAS….IT ALSO DELETED THE FOLDER THAT THE THOR SABER WAS IN!. I feel as if I have been run through the chest with a saber myself….I had worked on that design for more than a month and now it’s gone.

And yes, stupid rookie mistake, I only had the design on ONE USB stick not both that I own. Even worse (or a good thing depending on how you look at it I suppose) it left all my other work intact. So I will still be posting a design this weekend…just not the one I was really planning for. I am going to post the two teaser images I did upload to WordPress and I will set about bringing the Thor saber back to life….I WILL REBUILD IT SOMEHOW!

I feel sick to the stomach to be honest, but I just want to say sorry to everyone who was looking forward to this design…I was just as much, as I was especially proud of it…..hopefully you will return this weekend when I will post a surprise saber!

Thanks for your support and looking in today (it’s very much appreciated after today’s events) Till this weekend…..

For Tyeth’s 2018 Review

Hello Everybody and welcome to the end of year review! It has been a rollercoaster rocket ride this year for me. Not so much physically but more mental and emotional. I had a lot to learn these past 12 months. This is going to be written on the fly so if I forget anything sorry but I’m getting older too 😀 So here we go way back to January.

I was fortunate enough to begin my year with a nomination for a “Unique Blogger Award”! I have had a few over the past three years but it’s always nice to start a year with an honour like this. However I was on a roll with my saber designing and created a design for a very talented Cosplayer called Allure Cosplay. Allure has an outfit depicting a Sith Lady named Darth Talon, and I created a special hilt in the same red and black colour scheme. I was also able to share the images with her and I think by her reaction she liked it.

At this time I was using an online application called the ASP Builder, provided by an American lightsaber company named Saberforge to create my designs but using the preview images I edited them in Photoshop to add the coloured layers of paint. The Saberforge application could only produce silver, black or aged looks. However I didn’t just create Allure Cosplay’s hilt…I mocked up designs for Comic Book Super heroes including “The Flash” and “The Hulk” And funnily enough my images seemed to have attracted the attention of a certain saber manufacturer….More on this later as big news was about to break….

That news was the announcement that on Apirl 30th, the forum I used to frequent  and post my designs on before starting my blog here, Saberforgeforum, was going to be shut down by the owner of the company. Mr Isherwood the “Owner” decided that it wasn’t cost effective and stretched his vast resources so shut it down. This meant a lot of unhappy forum users but it allowed the owner to better control the narrative about his company by using Facebook groups which he could (and does) censor. I posted about the sad closure as I had a lot of contacts on that forum, you can read about it by clicking HERE: (Saberforge Forum is no more)

But that was just the beginning of the BIG NEWS! I will tell you more on PAGE 2 just click the button below to meet me there….

Just a quick update, don’t worry I’m still here!

Hello Everybody….I  haven’t disappeared and am still here but work on my review of 2018 is taking a little longer than I anticipated. I knew I had done quite a few things this year but looking back over my year’s posts it’s hard to know what to include or not!

So as a progress report I am about three quarters through typing it up and as I am writing it without a script I have to insert links and images and tidy things as I go, but I should have it finished for the 31st December. I hope you will look in on FSabersite and share a trip through my past year’s adventures on New Years’ Eve!

Till next time….here’s a little Meme to test if you are a true Star Wars fan!Roger Roger

A Glowing New Trick! For finally works it out.

Hello Everybody, I’m so glad you all survived the Halloween week and made it back to see my next post. And do I have a story to tell you! Many of you will have noticed since I started using Blender for my designs, that the blades don’t have that “Aura” effect around them, they just glow a certain solid colour. Here are a few examples of what I mean…

The blades do emit light but are just solid beams, they don’t have that special “Movie Magic” look do they? The reason is that I mistakenly thought I had to program or assign a special material or part to the model to get the effect. Previously I used to add the effect using GIMP, a photo editing software (like Photoshop but a free software) and had to edit each image. In some galleries I had 6,7,8 maybe more images that I had to add effects to and it took a long time. But there is good news, I came across a video on YouTube that explained where I was going wrong with Blender. Blender can produce the movie effect but not in the way I expected. As I said I thought I had to manipulate the model, when in fact all I had to do was add an instruction to modify the light colour AFTER I had built the saber. So I add a blade to the hilt, then choose the colour/light and then attach the effect to the colour – not the model! Now I have done this to the four sabers pictured above to see how well it works and here are the results….

I think the new technique works rather well, if I say so myself! And the real bonus of this new found skill is that Blender does the work for me, and if I have to make 6,7,8 images from different angles the effect is automatically added whenever I click the button to create a new picture. Even better than that, look closely at the Ecto-Plasma hilt emitter and you can see the effect “seeping” through the holes. This means the aura is actually “within” the images and models and not just an overlay!

So I apologise that I didn’t have a new saber to share with you today, but I am tweaking the ones I have scheduled so they have the “new blades”. And in future all my new builds will hopefully look a little more “lifelike”.

I am about to run out of time as I need to make a start on the new schedule. But please call back for upcoming posts where I have the long awaited “Watery Warrior” and “Brave Robot Car” hilts (inspired by two big movies due out in December), a saber dedicated to the “Best pilot in the Resistance” and my new collaboration TV and Movie franchise series of hilts. Phew that’s a lot. Thank you for looking in today and supporting my site whether this is your first visit or you call regularly, you are much appreciated. Till next time….I’ve got to GLOoooow!

Two Years and Counting – Can it be that long?

Hello Everybody! Well this is a bit different, I was just preparing my next offering for you all and I received a message from WordPress congratulating me on my SECOND anniversary! To say that sneaked up on me is understatement. I don’t know where the last year has gone but it went quick. So in retrospective mode I thought I would just take a look back and see what I’ve done the past 365 days.

This isn’t in order as I am typing this off the top of my head but here are a few highlights(?)….Firstly I welcomed in a new year amid a wave of “Anti-Star Wars” feelings from fans. They were/are really upset about how the Star Wars legacy (and Luke Skywalker’s character) was treated in The Last Jedi. I saw the film and I thought it did some things it needed to but also a lot of stuff it didn’t. I have to say I haven’t watched it again (can’t afford the Blu-Ray just yet) but I did take a chance and watch SOLO – A Star Wars Story, which on the whole was an entertaining action flick. It spawned a few designs for me so it couldn’t have been as bad as folks predicted! Here are a few links to some SOLO themed hilts: Bloodstripe for Han , Calrissian – A Scoundrel’s Saber and L3-37 “Elthree” Lightsaber .SOLO asws

Another turbulent time for me was the closing down of the forum where I sort of  made my name. That forum was the SaberforgeForum run and owned by a custom saber manufacturer company that produced the “Adaptive Saber Parts” virtual builder I used to use to create designs. Well due to “business reasons” the owner, Phil Isherwood clamped down and shut the forum in March. But not before offering the members the chance to apply to become members of his Facebook page community! (Firstly the members who wanted to join shouldn’t have had to apply for entry and this was probably just Phil’s way to control the discussion about Saberforge). Saberforge also updated their Adaptive Saber Parts application with new parts (which had been promised over the 2 years since it launched but never showed up). Great news for most but the upgrade specifications needed to run the program meant I couldn’t use it as my laptop is old (really old). Sooo I had to learn some new tricks and I did….I learnt to use Blender 3D modelling software. This has had MANY positive benefits. It has made it possible for me to create a lot more diverse designs than was possible with ASP. With more work I’ll also be able send my designs out to be built in real life (hopefully).

I also discovered that I may have inspired the company named above as my series of Super Hero Hilts seems to have spawned a series of similar hilts from Saberforge – so maybe just maybe they saw my designs and “liked” them. It feels quite cool to have created something that inspired others. And speaking of inspiring I was inspired by the artwork of a few people around the net. One young lady called Capili Jiron runs a blog and YouTube channel titled “Artistbybeauty” who is a very talented artist. Capili asked for ideas on subjects for her to draw and I suggested Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Clone Wars Cartoon and she graciously obliged me! Here is the timelapse video!

If you want to see more then check out Capili’s YT channel by clicking >HERE or right here on WordPress at Artistbybeauty.blog

(I have been introduced to another young woman on YouTube recently who is a professional concept artist and very big Star Wars fan. I have sent her an email and saber design as a thank you for her entertaining and passionately presented Star Wars videos. I hope to hear back from her so I can display the saber here.)

And last but not least, a long time friend of mine, Prowl 1701 has set up a new Scifi themed review and discussion channel. You may remember Prowl from early posts I made where I designed a hilt for him based on the Transformers character he takes his profile name from. You can see the hilt by clicking > Prowler Lightsaber . Prowl is a big saber fan and owns around 20-30 lightsabers I think at the last count. If you are fans of sabers, Star Wars and SciFi in general then please go check out Prowl’s channels. He has the best cameraman on the internet, Eric, though I will warn some of the saber battles you will see there are a little intense! (I have advised Prowl and his friends on safety gear 😀 ) Here are the links:

As I mentioned this anniversary crept up on me so I wasn’t prepared for this post but I have at least marked the milestone. Whilst proofreading this post I also realised I was awarded a Liebster Award which was a great honour so thank you you for that. And as always I want to thank you all, my viewers, followers…friends, new and slightly more elder states-people for your support. It means a lot to me that people find what I create and post is mildly interesting. I will continue to design for as long as you come to see my work. And speaking of which in a few hours time I will be posting my scheduled post of another Astromech Droid Saber design. I hope you will join me for that hilt! Till midnight (that’s midnight GMT!)….

For Tyeth Tries…Blender 3D!

Hello Everybody! You may recall I mentioned that the software I used to use to provide a basis for my designs, the Saberforge Adaptive Saber Parts builder, has recently undergone an upgrade. YAY!….Not! Unfortunately there are nice new parts to build nice copies of some famous lightsabers but the software specifications to run the application have also altered and my laptop can’t access it any more. This is a problem, but not one I cannot overcome. I had been planning for this eventuality for a while. I thought this might happen one day so attempted to learn how to do 3D modelling using Google’s SketchUp software, but there were a few hiccups. I did manage to knock out a couple of models but they were basic box-like buildings and a saber hilt that was very basic, as I couldn’t create curved parts (due to only having access to the free version).

Ok, these are modelled in SketchUp and some of you may think they look alright, but they took me over 2 weeks each to learn how to and then actually build them!

However I wanted to create parts that had rounded sufaces, similar to fluted wine glass stems, the problem was SketchUp Free couldn’t work with complex geometry like that. If I wanted to create a window on a curved section, the cut away feature wouldn’t act on the curved surfaces. I struggled for weeks. Then a friend of mine called Evil Genius 180 suggested I try a different 3D modelling software called Blender 3D. As I have mentioned my laptop is OLD and I didn’t think Blender would work on it so left Blender alone. Skip forward 7-8 months and here we are and I can’t use the ASP builder but another gentleman, Neo Trinarty from MakeRoomMakeRoom also advised me I should try Blender. He informed me I could download an older version too that may work on my machine! I had to do something so went and had a second look on the Blender website and sure enough there was a page dedicated to old releases of the software. I found that it wasn’t difficult to install or remove if it didn’t work. Long story short, I quickly downloaded, unzipped the files and opened up Blender 3D. It worked! After looking to see where the controls were I started playing. This is what I came up with, and again not the greatest but these were my first Blender steps…

I built this in under 30 minutes! And that included my orientation with the software to find all the menus. Actually the task that took the longest was working out how to align the camera to create these screenshots LOL! What I am REALLY happy with is that there are a few subtle “complex curves” in this hilt around the emitter blade socket and a flared pommel. (I also kinda like the fancy switch box section which I bevelled off). As you can probably tell I am very, very excited by this and am raring to learn more (like adding photo-realistic textures and glowing blade thingies). But there’s more….Blender 3D can also do animations! I even made this saber drop from the sky and land on the white “table top” but then it bounced off!

So I want to thank Evil Genius and Neo for convincing me to try this out, I am so pleased so a big THANKS GUYS. Now both Evil Genius and Neo as you can tell must have some 3D modelling experience, well they do and they both have blogs where they display their work.

Evil Genius enjoys building Star Trek inspired starships (and a few lightsabers) and you can find his site by clicking Evil Genius180’s Hobby Den.

Neo Trinarty is a big Whovian (Dr Who fan!) that likes Daleks. You can visit his site and see his creations by clicking MakeRoomMakeRoom.

I am running short of time on this post but before I go and learn some more 3D modelling, I need to say thank you to you all, my viewers and followers. I have just reached 7000 hits which crept up on me and my article about the Saberforge Forum closing was highlighted in a recent YouTube video, so I know you are out there and viewing my site. It means a lot and now I will soon be able to bring you more BRAND NEW designs, so I hope you will return to see those. Thanks and till next time.

BREAKING NEWS! – Saberforge Forum is no more (taken offline by SF owner)

Yes, Hello Everybody, I am with a sad heart having to bring this little bit of news to saber fans. As some viewers here know I have been a long time contributor to the “fan run” lightsaber forum called Saberforge Forum. Well as the title suggests this forum is no more. Members were greeted with an announcement on 25th April that the site would close on the 30th April. This news wasn’t welcomed warmly and many members showed their disappointment and posted “requests” for the owner Mr Isherwood to reconsider the decision as the forum was such a great resource for information and friendship between saber owners and newcomers to the saber hobby online.

But these pleas fell on deaf/ignorant/uninformed ears and as of the 2nd May the OWNER of the forum finally pulled the switch. He's Done It

It was blamed on the “costs incurred” and “stretching of Saberforge resources” and “not enough usage” and the “there are much more up-to-date social media platforms we could use”. But we have been offered an “Alternative” as you can see in the screenshot……

Well this has in my honest opinion been a mistake. I am not on social media for personal reasons, and because of the current Facebook/Social Media data security issues a lot of other people will prefer not to join up to social media. Other members have already set up various chat rooms for “survivors” to meet up and carry on long established friendships and form new ones. I will in time seek out these groups and join up and hopefully be a helpful contributor to these communities instead.

I just need a break. This past week has been a test. I’d like to think I’m a polite and honest guy/Jedi and if I were to say anymore on this subject in my current frame of mind some of you may question that description of me! I will say that on the forum I had to “bite my lip” to keep to forum rules and tried not to create complications but believe me there were issues that I didn’t speak of and that I feel weren’t dealt with fairly or evenly. I will leave it at that, the people involved know who they are and what they did…whether they say otherwise or not.

I want to celebrate and thank ALL the great members I encountered and shared exchanges with during my time on the now deceased forum. It was a pleasure to be able to help some of you out and the conversations were informative and enjoyable. I will cherish those times and hope some of you will somehow find this place and we can chat again (I couldn’t mention this website on the forum in case I broke Rule Four which said I wasn’t allowed to “recruit” for another website, social media platform or online group/message board).

I now have a lot more time to post here but I will end this post now as I have “wounds” I need to attend to. I am taking as many positives as I can from this experience and will become stronger….as will all of you my friends and forum survivors. I don’t know how many people will see this but it is out there now….take care Forum Survivors and thank you.

(I do want to thank Saberforge for providing the forum in the first place but due to this decision, my praise cannot go any higher than issuing this acknowledgement.)

A Public Announcement from FTSabersite

Hello Everybody, sadly I have some disappointing news. There has been some nasty suspect activity going on around WordPress based blogs (starting on April 2nd). It involves a “Spamming” attack from a third party server. It involves a person or persons leaving likes on bloggers’ comments but the web address that these supposed likes originate from are linked to websites providing inappropriate “adult”material. They have swarmed WordPress blogs around the net and they have “liked” comments blog authors leave on other member’s blog pages (and usually older comments posted 2-3 weeks past).

WordPress are aware of the situation and are working on a fix to stop the whole thing getting worse. We have also been advised to turn off the option to leave likes on comments made on our sites. It is unfortunate and when the “fix” has been established then maybe likes can be re-instated.
