Hello Everybody, today we enter the shadowy world of The Watchmen again with this nice design from my friend Roger Redux. His design has a distinctly Ornithological theme to it as it is for the character called Nite Owl. Nite Owl is Daniel Dreiberg who was born in 1945 and would later become the second superhero to carry the Nite Owl name. Dreiberg was fascinated with technology and aviation. With his knowledge he created gadgets to aid his crime-fighting exploits, rather than relying on brute strength and force. He created a flying vehicle nicknamed “Owlship” and numerous other bits of kit. Roger however felt that Nite Owl needed a lightsaber, the pinnacle of elegance and technology, so designed this hilt, here is NITE OWL: GLAUX…
This certainly has a look of an owl to it, I can just imagine an owl sitting in a tree when I see the hilt held vertically. The emitter with it’s pointed spines look like the tufted feathers that stand up on an owl’s forehead (if they have a forehead that is!). The weathered finish of the hilt gives it a mottled appearance similar to the flecks and camouflage of the night hunter’s plumage. And to finish the hilt off, there is a beautiful brown leather wrapped body capped by a pommel which has strakes that give the impression the saber has talons!
Roger named the hilt after the Watchmen character, but also after a Greek coin. Roger informed me that the word Glaux translates as “Little Owl” in ancient Greek or simply “Owl” in modern Greek. The Owl appears on the back of one of the Athenian coins!
As usual I am running out of time for this post so may I say Thank You to Roger for allowing me to share this design with you all. As always I want to say thank you to all the visitors both regular followers and new viewers (I saw that some folks came from India and Indonesia this past week!). Your support is very much appreciated. I will end here so I can work on a few more new hilts. Till next time.
